Why Vitamin D is the coolest and might just help you survive winter!
This is the time of year when many of us start to miss the sunshine and are hoping for warmer days and all that comes with it. During these darker months, we tend to lack the ‘sunshine vitamin’, also referred to as Vitamin D.
In the health world, Vitamin D has taken its place at the top. When your skin catches those UVB rays, a funky chemical kick off turning 7-dehydrocholesterol into previtamin D3, which with a little heat transforms it into the dazzling Vitamin D3!
Okay, but why is this so important?
Vitamin D is a powerhouse, involved in many bodily processes, but today’s focus is what role it plays in Immunity and flu prevention. Vitamin C is always associated with immunity and the flu but don’t rule out Vitamin D for the role it plays in flu prevention.
Research suggests that optimal levels of vitamin D may contribute to a lower risk of developing respiratory infections, and their severity and symptoms when infection does occur. But sunlight alone in the winter months won’t save you as the UV levels are much lower and Vitamin D synthesis drops between October to March.
So what can you do?
Vitamin D can be found in fatty fish, fortified dairy products, eggs and mushrooms however the recommendation in the UK is to supplement the diet with a 10-microgram supplementation as obtaining enough vitamin D in the diet can be a difficult challenge for most.
