Weight Loss and Takeaways, Can You Have Both?

It’s the 21st century, yet weight loss is still a concept that many of us struggle with. There’s no one size fits all, and what may have worked in the past, may not work now. Over here at Alyve, we are firm believers that over-restriction eventually leads to overindulgence and that the best weight loss ‘diet’ is one where you can incorporate a little bit of everything.

Friday night across the UK seems to takeaway night, but if you’re trying to lose weight, is this a no-go? Not necessarily! There are tricks that you can implement when ordering your favourite takeaways that might just help you stay on track!

Chip shop/Chippy

  • Fish can be grilled as well as fried
  • You can request for your fish to be lightly battered or even no batter
  • Opt for a small cone of chips alongside your fish with a side of mushy peas for added fibre

Indian

  • Tandoori and Tikka curries are usually lower in fat
  • Poppadoms can be grilled and microwaved, not just fried
  • Opt for plain sides such as plain rice and chapatis, as they will have fewer calories than fried rice, cheesy naan etc

Chinese

  • Chicken and prawn are leaner meats than beef/pork/duck
  • Careful with battered/fried veg and starters, opt for steamed or stir-fried e.g. steamed dumplings instead of pan-fried

Pizza

  • Choose a thin base over deep-fried/stuffed
  • Aim for at least 1 protein topping and 1-2 veggie toppings
  • Opt for lower-fat cheese if available
  • Dipping sauces can be high in calories and fat so be mindful of these

Fast food

  • Many chains offer sides other than fries, such as corn and beans
  • Opt for grilled meats over deep-fried
  • Avoid supersizing, opt for small/regular meals
  • Diet drinks are usually calorie and sugar-free

The tips above may not only just help with your individual weight goals, but they also contribute to general healthy eating. Takeaways are meant to be convenient and enjoyable, but it’s good to know that you can implement certain tips and tricks to benefit your health too!
